Ready To Make Some Important Career Choices?
Career Records was launched in the fall of 2002 by Deniz Tek and Ron Sanchez as an outlet for their many musical projects. The label is fully self contained, with a small circle of of musicians and artists who lend their talents as needed. God's Little Ear Acre is the in house recording studio where much of the work is carried out.
The goal has always been to work with select group of artists we respect. Roy Loney, Penny Ikinger, Angie Pepper, and The Plaintiffs are all musicians we have known for years and whose work we hold in high regard. It's important to us that we give our full attention to every release. While we might like to have signed others, our small roster, Donovan's Brain, The Soul Movers and The Deniz Tek Group are the priorities for us at the moment.
What about the music? Deniz Tek is well known for his work with Radio Birdman and all the groups that followed. Ron Sanchez has led the psychedelic "collective", Donovan's Brain since 1986. Between the two of them, there are enough musical influences to dominate the turntable at any party. The Career philosophy is deeply rooted in the traditions of pioneers like Atlantic, Stax, Motown, Island, and UA; right down to the matching suits and dance lessons. Deniz and Ron work closely with all the artists; producing and performing on the records. Donovan's Brain and Deniz serve as the house band, backing Penny Ikinger and Angie Pepper on stage and in the studio.
Career Records is also maintains a mail order shop, offering all the the Career releases, and a number of other related items. We also administer distribution for The Last Of The Bad Men and Richard Treece. You will find Career Records music on CD Baby and iTunes, Amazon.com and a dozen other digital platforms if you prefer to shop there.
As well as the shop and artist information, you will find photo galleries, essays about what we do and reviews of artists and music we like, Ron's radio show play lists, and a news page that is updated regularly.

Donovan's Brain - New Album, New Drummer
Ric Parnell, best know for his work with Atomic Rooster and Spinal Tap has spent the last two days in the studio working on material for the next Donovan's Brain album. Drums were added to seven new songs as well as three old tracks including the previously unreleased "Shambaholic". A second sessions is set for August.
Bob Sutliff sent over a demo for a new song today and is preparing tracks for "Nothing Lasts Forever". The latter was considered for Fires Which Burnt Brightly. Meanwhile, Colter is sorting out four new songs which he'll bring over to demo in the next few days.
It's a bit too early to detail the new songs. At the moment it looks like the logical follow up to Fires. There may be a few surprises. This productive period is reminicent of the 1998-99 sessions which yeilded two albums.

Donovan's Brain No. 7
Stones At Altamont
The goal was to have enough songs for a new album written and demoed by the end of the year. At this time there are 14 or 15 songs and several more bits and pieces in hand. Deniz and Bob Brown got their first chance to hear the new material last weekend. Comments were noted, and at least one song has been handed over to Bob to try an idea he had. I've rewritten one of the tracks to better fit the mood of the new album. Another old song has been pulled of the shelf and will get dusted off and shined up and added to the growning box of demos.
The first priority is getting the three new Soul Movers tracks completed and mix. Another sessions has been scheduled for next weekend. There are three new songs, though one was recorded twice, with very different arrangements. Soul Movers' bass player, Andy Newman tracked the basics at his own studio.
Last November, on the 40th anniversary of the Stones concert at Altamont, Deniz asked me to write a piece for his blog. I'd completely forgotten about this until he reminded me recently. You can find it here.
